Haymarket Toastmasters first meeting took place on the 16th of April at the Scots Guards Club in Haymarket. The meeting kicked off with the Club President of Haymarket Toastmasters Eu Jin Teh introducing the club and the purpose of Toastmasters, i.e. in helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Eu Jin coined the phrase ‘the currency of giving’ to depict the importance of the Toastmaster Community and how members joint efforts contribute to the success of Toastmaster clubs and member progression. The Toastmaster community spirit was evident in the number of members from neighbouring Toastmaster Clubs within Edinburgh and as far away as Perth who contributed to evaluations, table topics and speech making.

Distinguished guests of friends and other clubs also attended to support the first Haymarket Toastmasters meeting.

Arfaan Ahmed warmed the Toastmasters audience with his Ice Breaker Speech where he provided us with a heart-felt speech on the importance of finding happiness. Arfaan was followed by Pauline Dix who entertained us with a tale of being lost in the hills. Kirsty MacGregor informed us of her personal triumphs with a speech entitled ‘The Times They Are A Changing’. The speeches were evaluated by experienced toastmasters from Capital Communicators and Waverley Communicators. Feedback and criticism was graciously accepted by the speech makers. Robert Gow’s encouragement and enthusiasm resulted in a successful Table Topics session. Members and guests braved the somewhat daunting experience of impromptu speaking and provided the audience with an insight into their imagination.

Twenty-Six people attended the first Haymarket meeting. Three guests expressed interest in joining at the end of the meeting and two asked to sign up there and then. Feedback from members and guests who attended was positive. All in all the meeting was a success due to the support and experience of existing members and guests. The next meeting of Haymarket Toastmasters is on the 30th of April. Here’s to another successful meeting and many more.
