Much of the success of Toastmasters in Scotland is due to the inspiration of individual members. Oscar Merkx DTM was such a member but he sadly passed away in November 2015 after a sudden illness.

Oscar was a founding member of Glasgow Toastmasters in 2002 and joined several clubs in Scotland, serving on Club Committees, as Area 30 Director and Assistant Division S Director.

Oscar championed the D71 Conference in Glasgow in November 2011 and arranged for Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, TMI World Speaking Champion 2014 to deliver his  Edinburgh workshop. He was an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of Toastmasters Scotland and in recognition of this contribution The Oscar Merkx Memorial Award for PR has been created.

This annual Award, within Division S, recognises one Toastmaster whose dedication, commitment and effort made a noteworthy contribution toward Toastmasters in Scotland through publicity and promotion efforts within the period 1st July 2016 – 30th June 2017.

Nominations should be sent to Jane Cameron, Assistant Division S Director, at jane@cameronresearch.co.uk no later than 30th June using the nomination form. The recipient of the award will be decided by the Division S Director, Max Ridder-Patrick. The award will be presented at the Division S Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest in October 2017.
